How Valcyte Works
Valganciclovir is a prodrug that converts into ganciclovir in the body.
-
Conversion: Enzymes in the liver and intestines change valganciclovir into ganciclovir.
-
Activation: Ganciclovir is phosphorylated into its active form inside infected cells.
-
Action: The active form inhibits viral DNA polymerase, blocking viral DNA replication and preventing CMV from multiplying.
This process helps control CMV infections and reduces the risk of disease progression.
